New Zealander's love to grow plum trees, not only do they look good in the garden they are easy to grow as long as you have a sunny well drained position. If you have the room you can grow several varieties that will provide delicious juicy fruit from December through to February. At Wairere Nursery based in rural Waikato we have a great range of plum trees to choose from including all the favourites such as 'Black Doris', 'Elephant Heart', 'Sultan', 'Billington's Early' (better known as the Christmas Plum) plus many more. Plum Angelina Burdett (MB)

An excellent, early eating, European plum with smallish dark purple fruit. Flesh is yellow green with a rich, sweet flavour. Plant in a sunny spot. Deciduous.

Plum Santa Rosa

This plum is rated a 10. Firm sweet juicy fruit that is highly aromatic. Considered to be one of the best tasting plums in the world! The skin is crimson to purple and the flesh is yellow blushed pink. Hardy and vigorous. Ripe Dec-Jan. Pollinate with Omega or Black Doris. Deciduous.

Plum Satsuma

A great plum for fresh eating or culinary purposes as it is perfect for preserving or making jams and jellies. The medium sized fruit is round and dark red, the flesh is dark red, juicy and sweet. Crops well. Though partially self-fertile this plum would enjoy the company of 'Santa Rosa'. Deciduous.

Plum Sultan

Large, oval, plums with deep red skin and substantial red flesh that is juicy and highly flavoured. A vigorous tree that bears reliable, heavy crops on a rather low, spreading tree. Fruit ripens around January. Pollinate with Santa Rosa or Elephant Heart. Deciduous.

Plum Black Amber

This beautiful looking Japanese Plum tastes as good as it looks. Large purple-black plums with pale cream flesh that is stained red. Firm and juicy with excellent flavour. Generally an easy care plum to grow and the fruit stores well. Deciduous.

Plum Burbank

This plum has large round dark red fruit with yellow flesh that is sweet, juicy and aromatic. The fruit ripens around February. Crops well. Partially self fertile but performs best with either Santa Rosa, Omega or Duffs early Jewel. Deciduous.

Plum Coe's Golden Drop

This European Plum ripens quite late in the season, towards March. It is worth the wait as the large rich, juicy, golden fruit have a delicious flavour. Likes the best sunny position to do really well. Pollinate with Greengage or Reine Claude de Bavay. Deciduous.

Plum Purple King

This is a quality dessert plum with attractive large fruit that have purple skin and yellow flesh. Ripens late January. A good choice for warmer areas of NZ as this vigorous grower shows good tolerance to heat and humidity. Pollinate with Duff's Early Jewel, Sultan or Red Doris. Deciduous.

A Japanese plum that was California bred. The fruit is large and round with dark crimson skin that encloses firm yellow flesh that is juicy and sweet. Ripens around February. Pollinate with Santa Rosa or Satsuma. Deciduous.

Red Doris is a medium sized plum with red skin and yellow flesh. The flesh is sweet and juicy with a very good flavour. Once established red Doris produces generous crops and is highly recommended for domestic gardens. Suitable pollinators are Duffs Early Jewel and Santa Rosa. Deciduous.

Plum Victory

This European Prune Plum has large, firm, 'blue' skinned fruit of good quality. The flesh is yellow and very sweet. Matures quite late in the season towards the end of March. Very productive. Pollinate with 'Italian Prune' or 'Stanley'. Deciduous.

Plum Luisa

Plum Plumcot Scarlet Sunrise

A cross between an apricot and a plum, which ripens early, around December. Red/purple coloured skin and yellow flesh. Very sweet and full of flavour. Self fertile, however will produce more fruit if another variety is planted nearby. Prefers well drained fertile soil. Deciduous. PVR.
